House Rules - Jodi Picoult

Mixed feelings towards my rating as I kept revisiting my first Jodi Picoult, it was a 4+ rounded off to a 5, that again dropped to 3 and then raised to 3.5 like a pendulum. The chapters are organized with a crime scene opening followed by each character alternating their perspectives/points of view. The climax was so predictable, and the only shock is why drag if this is all that awaited?

The way Emma and Oliver stop Jacob from telling them what exactly happened suggested a big mystery waiting to be revealed at the very end. At the very end meaning literally at the very end, the last few pages to be exact. But I am sure any person would have deciphered that by then, and it ends immediately as in they lived happily ever after fairy tale. To think 99% of the book was on and on about proving Jacob was not guilty in such a hostile setting, the obvious truth unfolds and the legal acceptance is so quick?

Though the mystery element was not intriguing, the story-line was good, and the alternating perspectives/points of view were interesting and a relief, but it gets repetitive after a point. The events that unfold after whatever Thor witnesses in my personal opinion were not only an unnecessary twist but also very negative. At that moment the emotional binding I had with the protagonists completely disappeared and it ended up being just another story. It could have been treated more subtly and beautifully and thereby reinforce the beautiful character of Emma.

Not a bad read, not a great one too.
