Daughter of the Sun by Zoe Kalo

This is the first book in the series - Cult of the cat, authored by Zoe Kalo, and comes under YA, paranormal and Egyptian Mythology. The cover is beautifully illustrated with the pyramids, vast sands of the desert, cat's eye and a darkening sky, sounds lyrical doesn't it?

The protagonist is an orphaned girl Trinity, growing up in an orphanage run by nuns. The book starts with Trinity confused and a little worried about something going in or around her. Zoe beautifully shrouds this mystery which reveals at the end of the book, towards the end to be exact. The book is set at a fast pace and many things happen in the chapter 1 itself. Trinity being bullied, her concern for the other kids, standing up for herself, and her friendship with Brianna, which though is not elaborated all help form a neat sketch of the lead character.

By the end of the chapter we learn that she was not abandoned but kidnapped. Trinity leaves the orphanage to her grandmother's island taking along the things left behind with her. The island is in Turkey, and Trinity has lots to learn about her ancestry and the ways of the island. The mystery elements reveal as the story moves forward, and lots remain as they are and probably become clear in the coming up books in the series.

A very promising start, this novel has elements of love, friendship, betrayal, and a dollop of information from Egyptian mythology. Looking forward to the second of the series.
